We've tried for years to compare paper to hypertext. It's time to get real.
We need to understand how real hypertexts work, and how they fail.
We need to insist that critics and pundits do this. Letting them get away with not doing the work -- with theorizing about the nature of the medium in the absence of evidence -- disgraces us along with them.
